Baked Sea Salt Chicken

Sea salt has a slightly different taste than table salt because of different minerals it contains.Many people prefer sea salt to table salt because they claim it has a more subtle flavor. Sea salt doesn't contain iodine or any other additives.Sea salt and table salt have the same nutritional value.Sea salt is harvested from seawater through evaporation. Table salt is typically from rock salt, which is mined from mineral deposits.Sea salt is available in fine or coarse grain.If you favor foods with fewer additives, you may prefer sea salt. Last year I bought a big container of coarse grain sea salt and rarely use it.Actually I wanted to get a fine sea salt but mistaken bought a coarse grain.Well,I might as well use it for my cooking instead of sitting around.Here is my simple Baked Chicken with Sea Salt.

1 whole chicken,about 6 pounds
4-6 tbsp coarse grain sea salt ,if you extra salty add 2 tbsp
2 tbsp 5 spices flavor powder
2 fresh oranges,cut quarter
3 small or 1 large onion,peel and cut halve
1 bottle of spraying oil,any flavour


1:Wash and clean whole chicken inside out.Then stuff cut oranges into the cavity.Rub 5 spices flavor powder and sea salt all over the whole chicken.Let's it sit for 30 minutes or longer.

2:Preheat oven at 375 F.Prepare a baking tray with aluminum foil at the bottom.Lay the whole chicken on the aluminum foil,stuff onion at both side or underneath the chicken,then spray with oil all over the skin.

3:Bake whole chicken for 45 minutes breast facing down,then flip over bake for another 45 minutes to 1 hour.Check the chicken with chopstick by piercing all the way down from breast.If you have thermometer ,that better,but I used bamboo stick or wooden chopstick to check the wellness.If the blood is fussing out,then it's need more time to cook.Usually a 6 pounds chicken,it's take 1 hour and 45 minutes to cook.If you want the skin a bit crispy,turn oven to broil setting for another 5-10 minutes and set temperature to 400 F.

4:Remove whole chicken from oven and let's sit for 10 minutes before cut to serve warm.


If you eat chicken skin , prick the skin with fork before rub with seasoning .You will have a crispy and crunchy flavor chicken skin!

Sure looks good, evenly brown. Lesley, you know you can buy a grinder and use it to grind the coarse sea salt. I buy those sea salt grinder for use as my table salt. ;)

I love sea salt too ... a little more expensive but it takes a long time to finish. Your roast chicken looks so perfectly roasted.

I just bought sea salt from the asian store. It reminded me of kampung cooking. Your roasted chicken look delicious.

Thank you,and thank you for your suggestion to use grinder for coarsely sea salt!! Actually I have 2 new giant grinder still in box I can use! good idea to grind the coarsly sea salt to fine table salt.

it's sea salt are more expensive in Singapore? but here sea salt is slightly higher than regular salt but affortable..Thank you:P
